Old Salem

Find yourself in another place and time at Old Salem, one of the most authentic and inviting living history restorations in the United States. Costumed interpreters carry on the work of white and black Moravians in the backcountry congregation town and trading center of Salem, North Carolina. Each day the town comes to life with the household activities and trades common to Salem in late 18th and early 19th centuries. The village is open for tours every day (except Thanksgiving, December 24, Christmas Day and Easter Sunday), in all seasons of the year. Tanglewood Park

Tanglewood Park is probably best known to area visitors for its annual Festival of Lights during the holiday season but there is so much more to do year round. There's the Arboretum and Fragrance Garden, two-eighteen hole championship and one par-3 golf courses, horse back riding, ten lighted tennis courts, paddleboats, canoes and so much more.

Each year in Mid-November, Tanglewood transforms its rolling countryside into a winter wonderland of giant snowflakes and whimsical scenes. After more than twelve seasons, Tanglewood's Festival of Lights continues to be one of the largest and most spectacular light shows in the southeast. From storybook scenes to Holiday themes, over one hundred displays with nearly a million lights fill Tanglewood Park with the entire splendor and joy of the Holiday season. While you are there, enjoy some last minute holiday shopping and an old fashioned marshmallow roasting. The Festival of Lights is open nightly from 6:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. for a nominal cost. Mount Airy, North Carolina

Step back in time to when it was just a little simpler. Visit actor Andy Griffith's hometown and don't be surprised if you recognize some of Mayberry in Mount Airy. A stroll down Main Street can mean a visit to Floyd's Barber Shop, the Old Mayberry Jail, and Andy's childhood home. Stop for a bite at the Snappy Lunch. National Black Theater Festival

In 1989 Larry Leon Hamlin founded the National Black Theater Festival to unite black theatre companies in America and to ensure the survival of this genre into the next millennium. With the support of Dr. Maya Angelou, (who served as the Festival's first Chairperson) the National Black Theatre Festival was born. Held biennially, the NBTF has grown to attract more than 55,000 people nationally and internationally over a six-day period.

North Carolina School for the Arts

The North Carolina School for the Arts is an arts conservatory of international renown. The North Carolina School of the Arts was the first state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation. In 1972, the School became part of the prestigious University of North Carolina system.

The School's mission is unique: to train students from middle school through graduate school for professional careers in the performing, visual, and film and television arts. Performance is an integral part of the training program, and students, faculty and guest artists present more than 400 public performances and screenings annually in the School's facilities in Winston-Salem, as well as across the state and the Southeast, in major U.S. cities and overseas.

 

Of the more than 1,000 students enrolled, half come from two-thirds of North Carolina's 100 counties. Half come from 45 other states (from New York to California) and nearly two-dozen foreign countries (from Germany to Japan). Historic Bethabara Park

Visit Historic Bethabara Park for an imaginative journey to the Carolina backcountry of nearly 250 years ago. A small group of Moravians daringly settled this religious village and trade center in an 18th-century wilderness, full of bears, wolves, Indians and outlaws. The museum features a unique, restored and furnished 1788 church, archaeological ruins, Visitor Center with introductory video, exhibits and tours with costumed guides, as well as a reconstructed village, a French and Indian War fort and colonial and medical gardens. Körner's Folly

Located in nearby Kernersville just 20 minutes from the Quality Inn & Suites Hanes Mall is Körner's Folly. Körner's Folly is one of those little places that is so unique that you won't want to miss it. The eccentric structure offers 22 rooms spread out over three floors and seven levels, with ceiling heights ranging from six feet to 25 feet. No two doorways in the house are exactly alike. It has 15 fireplaces of differing designs. Its cubbyholes and trap doors fascinate; its pivoting "windows" and other openings anchor a unique air distribution system. Its murals and artworks add a sense of fancy.

Children-sized rooms give way to an airy, elegant, high-ceilinged Reception Room. A former stable becomes a library and a sewing room. Körner's Folly is a home chock-full of contrasts and comparisons. It has welcoming public spaces, and hidden nooks and crannies. It is complete with a room fireproof by 1890's standards and another, soaring attic space that became the nation's first known private little theater. Benton Convention Center

Located in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem and less than 10 minutes from the Quality Inn & Suites Hanes Mall, the Benton Convention Center offers more than 85,500 square feet of exhibit space. It has hosted the North Carolina Association of Nurserymen, the NC Music Educators, the State Games of North Carolina, the Bibleway Conference and the NC Library Association this past year.
